Clos des Papes
The Clos des Papes is one of the historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Rhône Valley), with a history marked by the remarkable continuity of the Avril family, established in the region since the 18th century. With a terroir nestled under the papal castle, the Clos de Papes resists passing fashions and raises its continuity and natural balance as a standard. In 2009, following the death of his father Paul Avril, Paul-Vincent Avril took over the management of the estate after having experiences all over the world: he worked at Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, with the Ott family in Romassan in Bandol, with an Swiss wine importer, spent time at the Legrand cellars in Paris and vinified in Australia. He then came back to the family estate to ensure the transition with continuity and elegance.
The Clos des Papes is divided into 24 parcels with different soils and microclimates, providing both finesse for some and power for others. A cocktail that has enable to plant each grape variety on the terroir that brings it to its optimum quality: grenaches in colder conditions, syrahs on the poor and stony soils, mourvèdres on the richer clay soils. The estate has been certified organic since 2016 and the grapes are harvested by hand. The wines of Clos des Papes are structured by the high proportion of Mourvèdre and perfectly balanced, between spicy notes brought by the Syrah and extremely satiny tannins. As they age, the wines reveal their full aromatic palette and create a vibrant, ample and magnificent picture. The white wines present floral and honey aromas with a very nice minerality and an exceptional ageing capacity.
